Five Habits of Healthy Families

Raising kids in today’s world can be a challenge. We want them to be happy and know that one of the ways to do this is to encourage them to have healthy habits that will last them a lifetime. But it can be hard to inspire these healthy habits in our kids if we don’t embrace them ourselves.

Fuel Up Healthy

Growing kids need plenty of good healthy food. If you want your kids to have the habit of eating right, it starts with making sure that they always have some healthy snacks on hand for when those tummies start to rumble between meals. Simple things like nuts or raw veggies can fill up a child’s empty stomach when they need refueling in the middle of the day.

It will feed their need for a crunch in their snack and make sure that snack does not include too much sugar. Keep them on hand and pass them out when that familiar cry of “Mom, what can I eat?” shows up mid-afternoon.

Make Breakfast and Lunch a Habit

In many families today, we often see a bad habit of skipping breakfast. Don’t let this happen in your family. It starts by making sure you are ready for breakfast by laying it out the night before. Even something simple like cereal can be easy to do in the morning if the table is set.

Include everything you need but the milk right there at hand, ready when you get up. Add in some fruit and maybe some nuts to that cereal to make it healthier and you have a quick and tasty breakfast that will start everyone off on the right foot.

Exercise Close to Home

If you have to get in the car and head out to find your exercise, chances are you will skip it all too often. Isn’t this why so many of us get gym memberships and then never go? But you can get that exercise in right there at home if you give it some thought. Growing up, we always had a basketball hoop added to the garage door and I would bang it in the summer until the sky was too dark to see.

You could also grab a length of rope and make a skip rope. You might even want to challenge your kids to a skipping contest! When the exercise is fun and this close at hand you are bound to do it more often, and even together.

Make A Grocery List, And Stick to It

All too often parents find that they are bringing home extras like cookies and chips that kids insist on when at the store. The result, of course, is that if you bring them home they will get eaten before the healthier food.

So, make a list of what you need for the week’s meals, and stick to it when you go shopping. Our rule was always to allow one treat per trip and no more. If you as a parent control what kind of food is brought into the house you are more likely to be able to keep it healthy.

Create Dinner Hour

Eating dinner together is a dying habit and we need to do all we can to bring it back to life. When the entire family finds a way to sit down together and have dinner, it encourages smart social skills in your kids and healthy eating in the entire family. It also means you have time as a family to sit and enjoy each other, find out how your kids day went and even have a conversation with them.
